Assam’s EV adoption rate has nearly doubled its 2023 pace, new data shows
New vehicle registration data shows electric vehicles now make up nearly 20% of Assam's market, a sharp rise attributed to expanding charging infrastructure and state policy support.
New vehicle registration data out of Assam shows a clear and fast-moving shift toward electric mobility, even as the state’s broader automobile market has slowed. Electric vehicles accounted for 15.7% of all new vehicle registrations in April, climbing to 19.4% in May and 19.6% in June — a trajectory chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted on X as reflecting “the state’s strong push towards green mobility through improved charging infrastructure, affordable tariffs, reliable power and supportive policies.”
The growth stands out against a cooling overall market. Assam’s automobile registrations, across all fuel types, surged 26.6% in 2023 before declining 3.6% in 2024 and a further 5.4% in 2025. That moderation in total vehicle demand has coincided with, rather than slowed, the steady rise in EV market share, indicating consumers are actively choosing electric options within a shrinking overall pool of buyers.
Sarma said the shift, aligned with India’s broader EV adoption goals, would help lower crude oil imports, improve environmental outcomes, and enable middle-class families to save more on daily expenses. Officials described the long-term objective as building an ecosystem that supports electric mobility through improved charging infrastructure, dependable power supply, and policies encouraging consumers and businesses to move away from conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
The state government has identified green mobility as a key part of its climate and sustainability agenda, with officials aiming to position Assam as a leader in clean transportation in India’s northeast while contributing to the country’s broader emissions-reduction goals for the transport sector.
