A 164-Foot Hybrid Superyacht Just Challenged Europe’s Grip on Billionaire Boats

The Delta 50BR is a 164-foot yacht, and it is the opening move in a plan to pull a very specific piece of business back across the Atlantic. Seattle-based Delta Marine has partnered with London design studio Bannenberg & Rowell to unveil a new family of hybrid superyachts ranging from 50 to 75 meters, according to a report by Luxury Launches. The pitch is direct: American engineering, built for American buyers, without a trip to a European yard.

That trip has long been the norm. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos commissioned his 127-meter yacht Koru from Dutch builder Oceanco. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs went to Dutch yard Feadship for Venus, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison has owned vessels from both Lurssen and Feadship. Barry Diller’s Eos and Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s Dragonfly were both built by Germany’s Lurssen, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been linked to a Feadship project called Launchpad. European yards, in other words, have quietly held this market for decades.

Delta Marine is betting design can shift some of that spending. The Delta 50BR is built around outdoor living, with a terraced stern pool, tiered lounging areas, alfresco dining space and full-height garages tucked beneath the staircases for surfboards and paddleboards. Its owner’s deck includes separate offices and a winter garden, letting a founder or financier keep working while cruising routes from Alaska to Scandinavia. Inside, the yacht runs a diesel-electric hybrid system with podded drivers and integrated energy storage, which the builder says brings quieter operation, lower emissions and smoother handling. It sleeps 12 guests across six staterooms, including a full-beam VIP suite and accessible cabins on the main deck.

The business case goes beyond styling. US coastwise passenger laws restrict foreign-built yachts from certain charter operations run between American ports, while American-built vessels can move more freely in markets such as Florida, New England and Alaska. That is a real commercial edge for a domestic builder chasing international-caliber clients.

Delta Marine was founded in 1967 and spent its early decades building rugged fishing boats for the Pacific Northwest. Its move into hybrid superyachts marks a deliberate step up into a market long dominated by European names, using both design partnership and regulatory advantage to make the case that billionaires no longer need to leave the country to get what they want.
