16,347 e-challans in 3 months: inside UP’s first AI-powered traffic crackdown

Uttar Pradesh’s first AI-powered traffic enforcement effort has produced a striking number in a short span: 16,347 e-challans issued in just three months, all through interceptor vehicles that spot violations and generate tickets largely on their own.

The Lucknow police commissionerate introduced the AI-based interceptor vehicles for automated speed enforcement, and officials confirmed the system has been in a trial run over the past three months, racking up that challan count against motorists caught breaking traffic rules.

The vehicles combine artificial intelligence-based speed detection, high-resolution cameras, automatic video recording and digital evidence capture within a single integrated e-challan platform, letting them flag a violation, record the proof and issue the challan in one continuous process.

DCP traffic Raveena Tyagi said the system ‘automatically detects speeding and other serious traffic violations, captures photographic and video evidence, and generates digital challans with minimal human intervention, ensuring transparency and reducing the possibility of disputes’ — a shift from the manual disputes that often follow conventional traffic stops.

Officials added that the interceptors are also being deployed against reckless driving, stunt-biking and illegal pressure horns, widening their use beyond speed checks to the broader set of violations blamed for road accidents in the city.
