From ousted Twitter CEO to $2 billion AI founder: Parag Agrawal’s comeback

Parag Agrawal went from being ousted as Twitter CEO to founding an AI infrastructure startup now valued at $2 billion.

Parag Agrawal, removed as Twitter’s chief executive following Elon Musk’s October 2022 acquisition of the company, has since built an artificial intelligence infrastructure startup now valued at roughly $2 billion. Agrawal founded Parallel Web Systems in 2023, focusing on the technology infrastructure needed to power large-scale AI systems.

Agrawal had joined Twitter in 2011 as a distinguished software engineer, rising to Chief Technology Officer in 2017 and then CEO in November 2021, making him one of the youngest CEOs in the technology industry at the time. His tenure as CEO lasted barely a year before Musk’s takeover led to a leadership overhaul that removed him from the company.

Rather than move into another executive position, Agrawal chose entrepreneurship, founding Parallel Web Systems in 2023. Within two years, the company attracted significant investor interest, and publicly reported funding information places its valuation at approximately $2 billion, among Silicon Valley’s fast-growing AI startups.

Agrawal is an IIT Bombay alumnus who secured All India Rank 77 in the Joint Entrance Examination before earning a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering. He went on to complete a PhD in Computer Science at Stanford University, working as a research intern at Microsoft, Yahoo and AT&T Labs during his doctoral studies.
